Habits That Are Holding You Back – And How to Break Free
The Subtle Ways We Sabotage Ourselves
We all have moments when life feels overwhelming. Some days, it’s the small, unfinished tasks that weigh us down. Other days, we fall into unproductive habits that drain our energy. When I find myself feeling stuck or anxious, I ask a simple question: What’s holding me back right now?
Writing down my thoughts helps me clear the mental clutter. It allows me to separate real concerns from unnecessary worries, and more importantly, it gives me the push I need to take action. Today, I want to share some of the habits that quietly sabotage our well-being—and how we can reclaim control.
Procrastination: The Invisible Burden
One of the biggest culprits is procrastination. We all know the feeling—putting off a task even though we’re aware it needs to be done. Maybe it’s an important email that remains unsent, a financial task we keep avoiding, or a personal goal we keep pushing aside.
Every time we delay something, a subtle weight settles on our shoulders. We think, I should just get this done—it’ll feel so much better—yet, we hesitate. And when the deadline looms, we rush to complete everything at the last minute, using up more energy than if we had just tackled it earlier.
Procrastination isn’t just about being lazy; it’s often rooted in fear—fear of failure, perfectionism, or simply not knowing where to start. Understanding this can help us approach it with self-compassion and a strategy to move forward.
Worrying About Others More Than Yourself
Another habit that can quietly consume us is worrying too much about others. As a parent, I often find myself thinking, Am I making the right choices for my children? Are they on the right path? It’s easy to blur the lines between being a supportive parent and carrying our children’s worries as if they were our own.
The truth is, we cannot control everything for them. Children need to navigate their own challenges, make mistakes, and learn from them. Our job is to guide them, not to shield them from every possible struggle.
The same applies to the world around us. While it’s natural to care about social issues and global problems, we can’t allow ourselves to be consumed by things beyond our control. If we can take meaningful action, we should. If not, learning to step back and set emotional boundaries is essential for our well-being.
How to Break Free from These Patterns
1. Write It Down – Make the Invisible Visible
When stress starts to build up, write down what’s bothering you. List out what’s weighing on your mind—tasks you’ve been avoiding, worries that keep resurfacing, or habits that aren’t serving you.
Seeing these thoughts on paper makes them tangible. You’ll likely realize that some worries aren’t as urgent as they seemed, while others require immediate action.
2. Start with Small Wins
Once you’ve identified what needs to be done, begin with something simple. Reply to that email, pay that bill, and schedule that appointment. Small accomplishments create momentum and reinforce the mindset that I can handle this.
If you’re feeling stuck, a change of scenery—like a quiet session at the library—can work wonders. Sometimes, simply stepping away from distractions makes it easier to focus and take action.
3. Protect Your Emotional Energy
Lastly, be mindful of where you invest your emotional energy. Worrying about things outside your control doesn’t serve you. Instead, focus on what you can influence and let go of the rest.
We’re all works in progress, and that’s okay. The key is to recognize what’s holding us back and take small, intentional steps toward change. Over time, these small changes add up, leading to a stronger, more resilient version of ourselves.
So ask yourself—What’s holding me back right now? And more importantly, What small step can I take today to break free?
Breaking Free from What’s Weighing Me Down
It’s okay not to be perfect. And it’s okay if these struggles happen again. What matters is that we keep recognizing the things that hold us back and practice letting them go, little by little. In doing so, we can grow stronger and more resilient. It all comes down to this question: What’s holding me back right now?
